These spiders are large, heavy, and slow moving,
- Not usually found inside homes, however they are commonly found building their large tough complex webs from gutters and eaves and between garden plants, especially across paths.
- They cut down their webs at daybreak and actively replace them at night. They wait at the centre of their webs, detecting trapped prey by holding the main anchor lines of the web with each front leg.
- Are a common cause of late-night screams when people walk into their web in the dark. Their weight and size, combined with the stickiness of their difficult-to-break thick web, causes panic to both the spider and the unfortunate person who encounters then at face level.
- Will escape rather than bite. Bite is not dangerous but can cause significant pain, swelling, nausea, and dizziness.
